Top buyer complaint

Dead-space cabinets under 10 inches wide exist in almost every kitchen, and no major brand makes a pull-out that fits them — buyers either waste the space or spend a weekend building one from scratch.

Seller Insight

Who should sell this

Sellers with kitchen/home organization experience, ability to source custom wire frame widths (5", 6", 8", 9"), and willingness to manage multiple SKUs for different cabinet openings. Works well for brands already in the pull-out or cabinet hardware space.

Who should avoid this

Sellers who want a single-SKU, high-volume product. This niche requires multiple width variants to be useful, which increases inventory complexity. Also avoid if you can't source full-extension slides — partial-extension slides will generate returns and bad reviews.

Competition note

Rev-A-Shelf and Knape & Vogt dominate the pull-out category but their narrowest SKUs are 11–12 inches. Amazon listings for 'narrow pull-out' are mostly generic 12"+ products mislabeled. The sub-10-inch space is effectively empty at the mass market level — a real white space.

01

No commercial pull-out fits cabinets under 10 inches wide

The most repeated complaint: buyers with 5–9 inch cabinets beside fridges, stoves, or in pantry gaps simply cannot find an off-the-shelf pull-out organizer. Standard products start at 12 inches. The result is either wasted dead space or a DIY build.

I want to install a pull out trash can in a narrow cabinet (9.0 in W x 20.5 in H x 23 in D). I'm having no luck finding anything that will fit the 9.0 inch wide opening. Does anyone know of a kit that will work for this? If not I'm thinking it could be accomplished with a couple draw slides and some wood.

I turned the 6-inch dead space cabinet next to my fridge into a proper pull-out organizer. Cabinet opening: 5 3/4 in wide x 30 in deep x 34 in tall. I built a plywood box that measures 5 1/4 in wide — I left ~1/4 in total wiggle room.

I've long wanted to add a pull-out basket to make the most of my kitchen corner, but I couldn't find one that would fit in my cabinets. I finally found it! But it's a bit difficult to install, maybe I'm not good at it.

Existing pull-outs don't fully extend — back of shelf is inaccessible

Users who do find a product discover it isn't full-extension: the rear 4–5 inches of each shelf are unreachable when loaded. Cabinet pros in the comments confirm this is often due to wrong slide hardware and is a known industry problem, not user error.

The 3" base spice pullout doesn't extend all the way and also doesn't pull out smoothly. The back 5" of each 21"-long shelf isn't accessible, especially when racks are loaded up, or jars will slide back there and be difficult to get out. The contractor says this is just how these spice pull-outs are.

wrong slides. those are strictly for horizontal drawers, and they aren't used much in residential applications much as well.

r/cabinetry· 12 upvotes· Medallion Pull-out Spice Rack Issue

I can see that the slide is fully extended. In situations like this, we would use an oversized slide to provide more extension (24" slide for your 21" rack) because the end of the glide is mounted inside the cabinet opening. It will never open fully with those slides.

03

Shelf sides too low — items fall off when pulled out

A recurring design flaw: the side rails on narrow pull-outs are shallow, causing spice jars and cans to tip and fall during use. Users resort to adding bins or plexiglass extensions as workarounds.

I want this narrow pull out drawer to be a spice rack. Its low sides allow the spices to fall off so I don't think that's the intent of this cabinet. Is there an insert I can buy for this existing piece? Or do I need a Rev-A-shelf type of replacement?

r/kitchenremodel· 9 upvotes· Can I modify this pull out cabinet? Or do I need a new one

I'd add a bottom to the top two rails so you can fit small spice jars on the top, then maybe add some plexiglass extensions to the inside of the mid and bottom rails to extend the height up a bit to keep jars in.

04

Difficult installation in finished cabinets — no professional is comfortable with it

Even professional kitchen installers describe narrow cabinet pull-outs as painful to fit in completed kitchens. Countertops and face frames reduce clearance, and installation instructions rarely account for retrofitting.

I install high end kitchens for a living. NO ONE is good at installing these. It looks like you did a good job! If you get the chance, go back and put a screw in EVERY hole a screw can go in to attach it to the interior door of your cabinet.

r/kitchenremodel· 3 upvotes· I've long wanted to add a pull-out basket to make the most of my kitchen corner

Those are a pain in the butt to install in a finished cabinet with counters on. They are a bit of a pain to do in the shop even — and that's on a workbench before final assembly of the box and with CNC drilled holes for the screws.

IKEA's own pull-out accessories don't fit narrower or shallower cabinet variants

IKEA users with non-standard depth or width cabinets find that IKEA's pull-out accessories only support the larger standard size. The large installed base of IKEA kitchens makes this a sizeable addressable market.

I have a 60cm wide, 37cm deep Metod kitchen cabinet and would love to install a pull-out shelf. Unfortunately, the one made for these cabinets only fits the deeper 60cm/24" version. Is there another Ikea item I could adapt for this purpose? Or am I better off DIY-ing it with third-party items?

DIY as only viable solution — strong signal of market gap

Multiple high-engagement posts show users building their own solutions from plywood and drawer slides. A 1,114-point post for a DIY fridge-gap slide-out and a 662-point IKEA hack both confirm the desire is widespread and the commercial market is failing to serve it.

I built a next-to-fridge slide out spice rack cabinet [from scratch] — $120x2 for the racks and sliders seems a bit steep. Aren't there cheaper sources?

Width-adjustable pull-out kit for 5–10 inch cabinets

high

An adjustable-width pull-out (telescoping side panels + standard slides) that ships as a kit targeting 5", 6", 8", and 9" openings would directly address the core gap. No such product exists at mass market price. Position as 'fits the dead space next to your fridge.'

Full-extension slides as a spec differentiator

high

Every current complaint about inaccessible rear shelf space traces to partial-extension slides. Shipping with certified full-extension ball-bearing slides and calling it out explicitly on the listing ('100% full extension — access every inch') is a low-cost but powerful differentiator.

Higher side rails with anti-tip lip

high

Current narrow pull-outs have 1–2 inch side rails; users report items falling off. Raising rails to 3–4 inches with a front lip (or optional add-on rail extenders) solves the core usability complaint without mold changes — just a taller wire frame or extrusion.

IKEA-compatible retrofit kit targeting Metod/Sektion owners

medium

IKEA has tens of millions of installed Metod/Sektion kitchens globally. A pull-out kit designed to fit the 15" (37cm) depth variant that IKEA doesn't support would capture a large, pre-defined audience with known cabinet dimensions — low CAC via IKEA-hack communities.

Differentiation

No mold change needed

Upgrade to full-extension ball-bearing slides (same mold, better hardware sourcing)
Raise side rail height from 1" to 3–4" using taller wire gauge
Add a front anti-tip lip to existing wire frame design
Offer multiple fixed widths (5", 6", 8", 9") as separate SKUs from same base frame

Requires mold change

Telescoping/adjustable width mechanism (new structural design needed)
Tool-free width adjustment with locking mechanism
Integrated soft-close mechanism on slides

Seller Verdict

This is a genuine product gap, not a crowded category — the evidence shows buyers can't find what they need and are building it themselves, which is the clearest possible demand signal. The main risk is inventory: you need multiple width SKUs (5", 6", 8", 9") to cover the range of cabinet openings, and if you ship with cheap partial-extension slides you'll earn the exact reviews the existing market has earned. Get the dimensions and the slides right, and there's a defensible niche here.
