Demand Validation

Reddit shows consistent, low-intensity pain around cup holder sizing across dozens of car model subreddits — Hyundai, GMC Sierra, Crosstrek, and Honda owners all complain about cups sliding or rattling. The strongest signal comes from DIY workarounds (koozie stuffed in, duct tape, 3D-printed inserts), which confirms the generic Amazon options aren't solving the problem cleanly. However, overall discussion volume is modest and skews toward 'mild annoyance' rather than urgent unmet need.

Verdict

Proceed with caution

Top buyer complaint

Generic cup holders are either too big (cans rattle) or the wrong shape (non-standard holders), and when drinks spill, the residue is nearly impossible to fully clean from the plastic.

Best opening angle

Lead with the stainless steel cup noise problem ('Never hear that screech again') or the washable/detailing angle ('Lift out, rinse, done'). Both have clear emotional hooks that generic listings miss.

Seller Insight

Who should sell this

Sellers who can run car-model-specific listings (Crosstrek, Civic, etc.) or who have strong lifestyle creative for the female car accessories market. Also a reasonable fit for anyone already selling Stanley/Yeti accessories.

Who should avoid this

Generic dropshippers with no ability to create targeted listings or model-specific SKUs. The commodity layer at $5-8 is too crowded to win on price alone.

Best positioning angle

Lead with the stainless steel cup noise problem ('Never hear that screech again') or the washable/detailing angle ('Lift out, rinse, done'). Both have clear emotional hooks that generic listings miss.

Competition note

Amazon is saturated with generic 4-pack silicone inserts at $5-10. Most are identical white-label products. Differentiation through car-model targeting, metal-cup cushioning, or aesthetic designs is the only viable path above the commodity floor.

Cups and cans rattle or slide in oversized holders

Many modern cars ship with wide cup holders sized for large tumblers, leaving standard 12/16oz cans and slim bottles rattling constantly. Users resort to wedging napkins or stuffing a koozie as a stopgap.

I purchased a 2023 Elantra and the cup holders drive me nuts. For a standard 12/16oz can, the cans slide all over the place. Is there any after market product that I can insert to hold the cans still? I've been wedging them with napkins.

r/Hyundai· 17 upvotes· Cup holder inserts

I just keep a thick koozie in my center console for cans. Not only does this prevent rattles, it keeps my drinks cold longer.

r/Hyundai· 3 upvotes· Cup holder inserts

Having my cups or bottles slide around the large cup holder is really annoying. I've tried looking all over GM websites, Amazon, and other 3rd parties but I cannot for the life of me find them.

r/gmcsierra· 39 upvotes· Cup holder inserts.

Non-standard cup holder shapes have no aftermarket fit

Car models like the Subaru Crosstrek have irregular, non-circular cup holder geometries. Generic round inserts don't fit, leaving buyers with no easy solution beyond custom 3D printing.

I have not for the life of me been able to find something that might fit.

r/Crosstrek· 39 upvotes· where are we getting cup holder inserts for these weird shapes?

There are 3D printed solutions for sale on Etsy, apparently.

r/Crosstrek· 7 upvotes· where are we getting cup holder inserts for these weird shapes?

3d printed an insert for that one cup holder that doesn't hold anything. $5 if anyone is interested.

Metal cups cause loud screeching noise against holder prongs

Stainless steel cups (Stanley, Yeti, Hydro Flask) drag against the plastic or metal prong inserts that most car holders use, producing a nails-on-chalkboard screech. Silicone lining would eliminate this entirely.

The cup holder in my car has these prongs which make a nasty nails on chalkboard screech when I use my favorite stainless steel coffee cup. Is there a product I can use to make them more slick but won't turn into glue over time like armor all?

r/AutoDetailing· 8 upvotes· Looking for something slippery

the cup holders rattle when there are hard plastic or stainless steel cups in them. I know this is a small thing, but it is annoying when I'm going to work and have to hear this every day.

Cup holder staining is extremely difficult to clean

Beverage residue, sticky sauces, and drips accumulate at the bottom and in crevices of cup holders. Even professional detailers with steamers can't fully remove stains — a removable, washable insert would solve this.

I have these stains in the cup holder of a BRZ that won't come out. I used a brush and my black line interior cleaner and that didn't work and I even took my steamer over it for a few seconds and it just won't come out.

r/AutoDetailing· 1 upvotes· What could I do to get stain out of plastic

Door cup holders had staining in them still. Door handle wells and cup holders still had dirt.

Demand for aesthetic/personalized versions is validated

Handmade decorative car cup holder coasters (resin, printed designs) generate strong engagement. A craft post showing custom car cup holder coasters received 766 upvotes, with comments asking how to make them for gifts.

Absolutely in love with how these turned out. Before anyone ask they are coasters for your cup holders in your car. I make custom ones.

r/crafts· 766 upvotes· Absolutely in love with how these turned out.

I love this! Would you be willing to share how you do this? I'd love to make some for Christmas.

r/crafts· 16 upvotes· Absolutely in love with how these turned out.

These are so cute! What are they made of? I've been wanting some but I don't want resin ones I'm afraid of them being in the sun.

Seller Opportunities

Car model-specific fit packs

medium

The core gap is that generic round inserts don't fit irregular holders (Crosstrek, Jeep XJ, etc.). A SKU strategy targeting top-10 high-volume car models with model-matched insert shapes would win searches no generic can win.

Silicone lining for metal-cup noise elimination

high

The Stanley/Yeti/Hydro Flask trend means millions of drivers now use tall, heavy stainless tumblers. A thick-walled, flexible silicone coaster insert that cushions the holder and eliminates screeching is a natural product — low cost to produce, easy story to tell.

Aesthetic/personalized angle targeting women car buyers

high

The product listing already targets women. The crafts post validates demand for cute, customizable versions. A pack with floral, neutral, or monogram designs sold as a set of 4 at $8-15 has strong gift potential and Etsy/Amazon appeal.

Washable insert positioning as a detailing-friendly product

high

Staining is a real and recurring pain point in AutoDetailing and car-care communities. A removable, dishwasher-safe silicone insert that catches drips and lifts out for cleaning solves a problem that even professional detailers struggle with. This angle also ties into car resale value.

Differentiation

material

No mold change needed

Switch to food-grade silicone (vs. generic rubber) for BPA-free positioning
Add ribbed or textured grip pattern on the outside for better hold
Offer color variety: black, beige, tan, pink to match car interiors
Increase wall thickness to cushion metal cups and eliminate rattle

Requires mold change

Car-model-specific shapes (Crosstrek, Jeep XJ irregular holders)
Add drainage hole at the bottom for easy cleaning
Taller insert design for large-format tumblers (Yeti 30oz, Stanley 40oz)

Seller Verdict

This is a viable niche add-on product but not a primary business. The commodity layer is too thick for generic positioning to work. If you already sell car accessories or Stanley-adjacent products, adding a model-specific or noise-reducing silicone insert SKU is low risk. Do not launch it as a standalone brand without a clear differentiation hook — the noise-elimination angle or the car-model-specific fit strategy are the two realistic paths to above-average margins.

Car Windshield Sunshade

The MagSafe car mount market is flooded with generic $15–40 products, but a real gap exists for a mount that solves the heat-during-charging problem with active cooling and eliminates grip-accessory conflicts — no current product cleanly addresses both.
